About the Talk
Around the early 2000s, a movement of independent filmmaking sparked in Kuala Lumpur. Films from the movement challenged the regularities of Malaysia’s national cinema. Adapting styles from global art cinema, filmmakers from multiethnic group recollect images and memories of Kuala Lumpur. Among them, Chinese Malaysian filmmakers actively rethink their images in the cinema made in Malaysia. In their works, urban displacement, ethnic relationships, economic constructions, as well as the impacts of globalization all become significant subjects. Other then introducing major contemporary Chinese Malaysian filmmakers and their works, this presentation will also engage conversations regarding how they connect their practices to regional and global cinema landscape.
About the Speaker
Hsin-ning Chang received her M.A. degree in Film Studies in Ohio University and now she is a Ph.D. student in School of Interdisciplinary Arts in Ohio University. She focuses on contemporary independent film, short film, and experimental film practices in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
